On 1/19/23 Ambassador Kristen Silverberg, COO of the Business Roundtable, discussed her legal and professional career and the ethical standards and challenges of a lawyer in public service. Ambassador Silverberg’s career includes federal appellate and Supreme Court clerkships, senior White House positions, and service as the Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs and Ambassador to the United Nations. Ambassador Silverberg discussed the varied roles of her career and the ethical obligations required to perform the duties of these roles and maintain the trust of judges, clients, and government leaders. Center for Women in Law Executive Director, Veronica Vargas Stidvent, moderated this discussion.

About the Speaker:
Ambassador Kristen Silverberg is President & COO at Business Roundtable. Prior to BRT she was a Managing Director at the Institute of International Finance. She served in the George W. Bush Administration as U.S. Ambassador to the European Union from 2008 to 2009 and as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs from 2005 to 2008. She also held a number of senior positions at the White House including Deputy Assistant to the President.
Ambassador Silverberg served in 2003 in Baghdad, Iraq for which she received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Outstanding Public Service. She formerly practiced law at Williams and Connolly, LLP in Washington, DC and served as a law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Judge David Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals. She attended Harvard College and the University of Texas School of Law, where she graduated with High Honors.
Ambassador Silverberg also serves on the Boards of Vorbeck Materials, the International Republican Institute, the Forum for American Leadership, and the Vandenberg Coalition, and is a member of the Steering Committee of the Reagan Institute Strategy Group.
About the Moderator:
Veronica “Ronnye” Stidvent is the Executive Director of the Center for Women in Law at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously, she was the Chancellor of Western Governors University – Texas. She also served as Head of Education and Training at Dimensional Fund Advisors, as a lecturer and director of Subiendo Academy at The University of Texas McCombs School of Business, and as the inaugural director of the Center for Politics and Governance at Texas’s LBJ School of Public Affairs.
Experienced in government, Ronnye served as Special Assistant to the Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Office of Management and Budget from 2001–2003 and as Special Assistant to the President of the United States for Policy from 2003–2004. In 2004, she was appointed by President George W. Bush as Assistant Secretary for Policy in the United States Department of Labor, a position she held until 2006.
Ronnye currently is a member of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Cultural Affairs and previously served as a commissioner of the Texas Commission on Human Rights. She serves on the Board of Directors of Amplify Credit Union and on the Board of Trustees for Southwestern University. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award, the El Paso in Austin Trailblazer Award and of the National Association of Hispanic Publications Latina Role Model Award.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin and her law degree from Yale Law School.
